Highlights of the Day
After bidding farewell to the Arabian Sea, we embark on a journey across the plains of Gujarat towards the dense jungles of Gir, home to the last remaining population of Asiatic Lions in the wild. Our adventure begins with a stay just outside the sanctuary on the edge of the forest, offering an immersive experience of both the wilderness and local culture. The peaceful surroundings will be our home for the day as we delve into the heart of Gir, a region that symbolizes both the resilience of wildlife conservation and the harmony between humans and nature. Gir National Park, which spans over 1,400 square kilometres, is a unique blend of thick forests, rivers, streams, and towering banyan trees. Apart from the Asiatic Lion, the park is teeming with wildlife. With 38 species of mammals—including leopards, wild boars, deer, antelope, and the elusive Blue Bull—this sanctuary is a testament to the richness of India’s biodiversity. The park also houses about 300 species of birds and 37 species of reptiles, making it an important ecological hotspot. The Asiatic Lion, once found across a vast region from Bengal to Turkey, is now confined to this small pocket of Gujarat. In the early 1900s, only 20 lions were believed to have survived here. Thanks to the tireless efforts in wildlife conservation, the population has grown to a remarkable 674 lions. This resurgence stands as one of the few success stories in global wildlife conservation, proving that with proper management, even highly endangered species can not only survive but thrive.
During our stay, we will embark on guided safaris through the national park, providing a chance to witness these majestic lions in their natural habitat. We’ll also learn about the local communities that coexist with this extraordinary wildlife, understanding the delicate balance they maintain with the forest. The region’s commitment to protecting the lion population and the surrounding environment is a powerful example of how conservation efforts can lead to tangible success. As we bid adieu to Gir at the end of the day, we leave with an understanding of its role as a sanctuary for wildlife, and the inspiring story of how the Asiatic Lion has been saved from the brink of extinction.
Highlights of the Day
Over the next two days, we venture far from the usual tourist trails into the heart of Gujarat’s rustic charm — the town of Muli, nestled in the Saurashtra region. Here, time seems to slow down, and tradition thrives amidst a landscape of history, culture, and quiet elegance. We’ll be honoured guests of the Ambika Niwas Royal Family, descendants of the noble lineage that once ruled this region. Known for their warm hospitality and deep-rooted heritage, the family continues to preserve the regal traditions of their ancestors while embracing modern values. The palace, still home to the royal family, offers a rare window into a bygone era of princely India.
Upon arrival at the majestic Ambika Niwas Palace, we’ll be welcomed with a lavish vegan royal lunch hosted by none other than the Prince of Muli himself. The meal will showcase a rich array of traditional dishes — a true culinary journey through Gujarat’s royal kitchens, all lovingly prepared with plant-based ingredients. In the evening, we’ll visit the ancestral Surya Temple, built centuries ago by the forebears of the Muli royal family in reverence to the Sun God. The temple’s intricate carvings and spiritual ambiance make it a profound place of reflection. We’ll also stop at the nearby Vishnu Temple to witness a traditional Hindu Aarti ceremony, a ritual of light and devotion that is both deeply spiritual and visually mesmerizing.
Returning to the palace by nightfall, we’ll sit down for a private vegan dinner with the Prince — a royal feast that echoes the flavours of history, made from recipes passed down through generations.
Highlights of the Day
We begin our morning with a traditional yoga session, surrounded by the calm and earthy vibes of rural Gujarat — the perfect way to awaken mind and body. After a nourishing vegan breakfast, we set out to explore the region’s rich agricultural and artisanal heritage. Our first stop is a local cotton farm, where we’ll witness the journey of cotton — from field to fabric. Learn how this humble crop is harvested and transported to nearby factories, where it is processed and prepared for markets across India and beyond. Along the way, we’ll also pass by lush fennel fields, their fragrance gently perfuming the air. We’ll then visit a beautifully preserved stepwell, a stunning example of ancient Indian water architecture, once a vital community gathering space and still a serene place of reflection. Returning to the hotel, enjoy a delightful vegan lunch featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. In the evening, we head to a nearby village known for its Patola saree artisans — here, you’ll get a first-hand look at the intricate process of weaving these exquisite, hand-dyed textiles, a tradition passed down through generations.
Back at the palace, our in-house chef will guide us through a vegan cooking session, sharing royal recipes and techniques. We’ll end the day with a hearty vegan dinner, savouring the dishes we’ve helped prepare a perfect conclusion to a day steeped in tradition, flavour, and community.
Highlights of the Day
After yoga and breakfast at the palace, we’ll set out into the wild outback of Gujarat to explore the intimidating yet stunning badlands of the Little Rann of Kutch! An incredible and fascinating vast salt-cracked barren desert; the epic dry salt marsh landscape stretches out endlessly as far as the eyes can see! At 4,954 square kilometres, the formidable, cracked earth terrain of the Little Rann of Kutch is not only home to plenty of out-of-this-world mirages and some pretty cool sunsets, but also a surprisingly vivid range of wildlife – including being the only home in the wild and final refuge of the lovely chestnut brown Indian Wild Ass, or Ghudkhur. Often referred to just as Khur for short, the Indian Wild Ass once roamed freely throughout western India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and south-eastern Iran. Now unfortunately the last remaining populations can only be found here in and around the Little Rann of Kutch. Listed as a threatened species and thankfully strictly protected, the population of the Khur has grown over the years here, and luckily, these charming equine beasts’ numbers have now risen to approximately 4,800. The Little Rann of Kutch is also home to a plethora of other wildlife from gazelle, blue bull, wolf, and Indian foxes, to falcons, babblers, bustards, and the majestic Greater and Lesser Flamingos.
Highlights of the Day:
After a leisurely vegan breakfast, we’ll bid a heartfelt farewell to our gracious hosts and the peaceful charm of Muli, carrying with us unforgettable memories of royal hospitality and rural elegance. As we journey back toward Ahmedabad, we’ll make a special stop at one of Gujarat’s most awe-inspiring monuments — the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rani ki Vav. Rani Ki Vav Located in Patan, this intricately carved stepwell was built in the 11th century by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband, King Bhimdev I. It’s a stunning example of subterranean architecture, with over 500 exquisite sculptures adorning its multi-tiered structure — a true marvel of craftsmanship, history, and symbolism.
From there, we continue on to Vadnagar, a town steeped in history and known for its rich archaeological legacy. We’ll visit the Vadnagar Archaeological Museum, where artifacts, relics, and exhibits tell the story of Gujarat’s ancient past — from Buddhist influences to regional dynasties. By midday, we arrive in Ahmedabad for a delicious vegan lunch at one of our favourite plant-based restaurants, celebrating our journey with vibrant local flavours and modern vegan twists.
If your flight is scheduled for today, we recommend booking an evening departure to allow time for a relaxed return and any unexpected delays.
